Gary Webber

Gary is a barrister who was in practice for over 22 years. He now practises as an independent mediator (accredited by the ADR Group), runs training courses in various areas of property law and maintains this website. He is an associate member of chambers at 33 Bedford Row, London and sits as a Deputy District Judge.

Gary has extensive experience in landlord and tenant, both commercial and residential, boundaries and easements, restrictive covenants and other areas of property law. He is the author of Business Premises: Possession and Lease Renewal, 3ed and co-author of Residential Possession Proceedings, 7ed (Sweet & Maxwell). He writes regularly for legal journals and is frequently asked to speak at conferences on property subjects.

Nigel is the editor of the co-ownership and mortgage sections of the site.

Nigel is a barrister, called to the bar in 1987; Junior Counsel to the Crown: 2000; Recorder (Civil): 2003

He is a property lawyer, specialising in mortgages with considerable experience of acting for banks, building societies and centralised lenders, as well as borrowers; and is the co-author of Mortgage Possession Actions (Sweet & Maxwell). Peta Dollar

Peta is the editor of the property transactions section of the site. She is also the author of the article on overage and co-author of the articles on surrender and re-grant and Developers beware! The pitfalls of tenants' rights of first refusal and collective enfranchisement.

Peta is a solicitor with more than 25 years’ experience of all areas of commercial property law. In May 2005, after 17 years as a Real Estate Partner at Denton Wilde Sapte, she made a lifestyle change, and now writes and lectures full time on a wide variety of property-related topics. She also provides in-house training for major law firms both in and outside London. She regularly publishes items in Landlord and Tenant Review, Estates Gazette, Property Law Journal and Solicitors' Journal. She has filmed a number of surveyors’ training videos with Einstein. Peta is a member of the Editorial Board of Landlord and Tenant Review, on the Consultation Board of Practical Law Company (Property) and the co-author of a book Tenants' Pre-emption Rights: A landlord's guide to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987, published by Jordans.

James Driscoll

James has provided material on commonhold and the Housing Act 2004.

Professor James Driscoll is a consultant solicitor in the property department at Trowers & Hamlins where he advises on all aspects of residential landlord and tenant law, housing law and other property law matters. He has particular experience and expertise in advising on residential long leases, the new commonhold law, rented accommodation and on all aspects of housing law.

He is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars for solicitors, surveyors, housing managers and other property professionals.

He is also the author of numerous books on housing and landlord and tenant law. These include Butterworths Residential Landlord and Tenant Guide and the accompanying Handbook (3rd ed in preparation), volume 22 (Housing) of Halsburys Laws of England, Butterworths Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents (volumes 18 and 24) and the loose-leaf works Housing Law and Precedents and the Handbook of Residential Tenancies both of which are published by Sweet & Maxwell. He is writing a new work on Residential Leasehold Property and another work on Commonhold.

James is a Consultant Editor to the Landlord and Tenant Reports also published by Sweet & Maxwell and is also well known for his articles in the Estates Gazette, the Solicitors Journal, the New Law Journal and other legal and professional journals.

He has been a member of the Department of Constitutional Affairs Working Group on Commonhold.

Michael Garson, solicitor

Michael contributes material to this site on Home Information Packs

Michael Garson, is currently the chair of the Law Society Property Section and an elected member of the Council of the Law Society and of the National Association of Estate Agents.

He has lectured extensively on the topic of Home Information Packs and his book a Guide to the Home Information Pack legislation is shortly to be published by the Law Society. He continues to offer training and consultancy on HIPs, solicitors property selling and other related e-conveyancing topics.

Piers Harrison

Piers contributes material to this site on enfranchisement and the right to buy.

Piers is a barrister, called in 1997. His practice includes property law, the law relating to probate and trusts, commercial work and sports law. Within the property field his practice includes all aspects of landlord and tenant (commercial and residential including leasehold enfranchisement), boundary disputes, restrictive covenants, easements etc. Piers also undertakes professional negligence cases which relate to property law. He has experience of contentious probate cases and inheritance disputes. He has worked on complex trust cases in a variety of different contexts. He undertakes commercial and common law work. In relation to sports law Piers has advised on management agreements and sponsorship agreements in several different sports and has undertaken cases in front of both the Football League Disciplinary Committee and the Football League Appeal Committee.

Saira Kabir Sheikh

Saira has been the editor of the planning pages of the site since January 2005.

Saira is a barrister at Francis Taylor Building (formerly 2 Harcourt Buildings) and specialises in all areas of planning and environmental law. She was ranked amongst the most highly rated planning barristers under 35 in Planning Magazine 2004. She appears regularly at planning inquiries in matters ranging from small developments to large urban extension schemes. She has recently promoted the Oxford City Local Plan as junior counsel. Her current work includes promoting the Luton Translink Transport and Works Order and the Babergh District Local Plan.

Sarah Thompson-Copsey

Sarah is the editor of the Landlord and Tenant (General) section of the site. She is also the co-author, with Peta Dollar and Anthony Radevsky, of the article "Developers beware! The pitfalls of tenants' rights of first refusal and collective enfranchisement".

Sarah is a former partner and head of the London property litigation practice of the firm then known as Denton Hall with over 15 years experience in commercial property disputes. Her legal experience includes advising many blue chip retail clients, developers and institutions. Sarah recently returned to the UK following five years working in Hong Kong and Tokyo, and obtained her LLM at King's College, London. She now works as a freelance legal speaker and writer, and has lectured for the College of Law, CLT, the ISVA, Imperial College, Legal Easel and Professional Conferences as well as appearing on Legal Network TV. Sarah is a co-author of Tenants' Pre-emption Rights: A Landlord's Guide to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987, and has written extensively for a number of legal and property journals.

William is a barrister, called to the Bar in 1982.
Practice: After call William spent 10 years in practice in London. He then moved to Bristol and re-qualified as a solicitor. Having acquired considerable expertise in agricultural law as an equity partner in Burges Salmon, he returned to the Bar as a member of Guildhall Chambers in Bristol in January 2002. William advises and represents landlords and tenants in all forms of dispute within or related to the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 including: succession; rent reviews; repairs; notices to quit; compensation; and issues about security of tenure. He advises and appears for clients in connection with the resolution of disputes related to the use of farmland and the countryside generally. William Hanbury

William specialises in property law especially boundaries, easements, co-ownership disputes, all areas of landlord and tenant and solicitor’s negligence, particularly where it arises from these practice areas.

He is a member of Zenith Chambers in Leeds, where he has practiced since 2003. He is in the course of preparing "Defective Premises: Law and Practice" for Sweet & Maxwell and is also the author of "Boundary disputes: A Practical Guide" (EMIS). He is also on the editorial board of EMIS’ property law service.

As well as being an external lecturer for CLT he has delivered a number of lectures for Liverpool Law Society and has written a number of articles and case notes.

Jon Holbrook

Jon is listed as “a well-respected housing practitioner” and a “leading junior for administrative and public law” in the Legal 500 (2005/6) and as a leader at the bar for social housing in Chambers (2006/7). He built up a tenant based practice during his twelve years at Garden Court Chambers and after two years at Hardwicke Building he joined 2-3 Gray’s Inn, in July 2006, where he is now mostly instructed by landlords and service providers.

In October 2005 Jon initiated the formation of the Social Housing Law Association (SHLA) as a forum for social housing professionals and their lawyers. He is chair of SHLA (www.shla.org.uk).

Nic Madge

Article on this site: Squatters' Rights - The position of squatters under the Land Registration Act 2002.

Nic Madge was originally a partner with Bindman and Partners, where he was in charge of their Housing Deparment. For many years he sat as a District Judge at West London County Court and became a Circuit Judge in 2004. He is an editor of the White Book, a regular contributor to Legal Action and other journals and the author of a number publications on housing law, in particular the Housing Law Case Handbook, Annotated Housing Statutes and Defending Possession Proceedings (Legal Action).


John Martin
